Summer Landscaping Tips

Idaho Falls landscaping

The weather is eastern Idaho is just starting to heat up. That means it is time for fun in the sun with barbecues, pool parties, and family gatherings. When you have people over to your home, you are going to want your landscaping to look good and provide a great atmosphere for your guests. Landscaping design and maintenance can be a big job, but when done right will be well worth it. We specialize in the art of creating a beautiful property and work hard to identify the vision of our clients and turn that into a reality. We also love to offer advice to those who want to maintain their landscaping on their own.

The following tips should be helpful for homeowners to preserve and enhance their property with well-maintained gardens, flowers, and grass. Keep in mind that we offer assistance in all of these areas if you run into trouble or just have questions about how to proceed. Let’s get started!

Mowing

Everyone knows it’s important to mow your lawn. Some cities might even punish you with a ticket or fine if you don’t. What many people don’t realize is that it makes a difference if you can follow a regular mowing schedule. Your lawn needs to stay at a certain height to ensure that it does not fall victim to drought or other potential problems. Don’t mow it too short! The recommended way to mow is to begin cutting your grass on the highest setting and gradually cutting it lower as you go through the summer season.

  • Your lawnmower is essential to maintaining a good-looking yard. You’ll also want to make sure to do the proper maintenance to keep it operating at a high level. This means changing the oil, filter, and keeping the blades sharpened in addition to anything else in your lawn mower owner’s manual.

Fertilizing

This is how you can make sure your grass is getting the nutrients that it needs. It can be a bit tricky because different types of grass have different needs. And using too much fertilizer will have a negative effect on your lawn. The nitrogen in the fertilizer can burn the grass — especially when the temperatures get high.

Watering

Water is the most important ingredient to producing a lush, green lawn. Make sure you don’t underwater! The best time of day to water is early in the morning. This is because the temperatures are mild and plants are better able to use the hydration. Watering during the hottest part of the day isn’t very efficient. This is because the water will evaporate before it has a chance to reach the roots of your grass. Plus, some plants actually go dormant during the hottest times of the day. Neither is watering after the sun goes down. This will leave your grass wet all night long and make it susceptible to fungus. If you are using a sprinkler system, it is recommended to check every sprinkler to make sure it is covering the right areas and not putting a lot of water on your house, sidewalk, or driveway.

Weeds

Clearly, allowing weeds to grow and run wild in your grass is not good. This is especially harmful to a garden. Dandelions are just one of the many weeds that can take over your landscape pretty quickly. However there are ways that you can limit that from happening. One way would be to spray a pre-emergent herbicide.

Plants

The quickest way to make an upgrade to your landscape is with color. This can really draw the eye toward your home. The right plants can really transform your landscape. Drought-tolerant plants are a popular choice because they are low maintenance and aren’t water hogs. You can also add a variety of flowers to gardens or along the walkways around your home. If you want to get a little more creative, install a trellis with some type of climbing plant to go up it. Another nice addition (if you don’t have it already) would be some trees to provide shade. After all, if you are going to be out in the yard in the summer heat, you are going to want a place to cool down a little bit.
